Results of the 2006 Eller College of Management International Ethics Case Competition

TUCSON, Ariz. – OCTOBER 30, 2006 – The team from Brigham Young University was the winner of the 2006 International Ethics Case Competition held Friday, October 27, at The University of Arizona’s McClelland Hall. Runners-up included the University of Wyoming – 2nd; the University of Washington – 3rd; and the University of North Dakota – 4th. The University of Texas at Austin and Pennsylvania State University won the “Bright Line” awards for highly ethical arguments.

CFE-Arizona is a participant in this competition and a $1,000 contributor.  Our Renee Jenkins CPA, was a Judge.   Details

Phoenix Central High School Career Day  - November 15, 2006

On November 15th member Scott Mitchem CPE, CVA, CFE and associate member Cheryl Becker CPA of Price Kong and Company will participate in Central High School's Annual Career Day.  They will show a continuous PowerPoint presentation of grafts of statistics reported in the Association's last three "Report to the Nation."  They will distribute brochures about careers in the field provided by the National Association.  They hope to speak with students and encourage them to continue on to college.

Northern Arizona University College of Business Administration
Accounting Panel:  September 22, 2006

Kathleen Barney, CFE, AZ Chapter Treasurer will participate in Northern Arizona University's College of Business Administration annual accounting panel.  The panel is comprised of 15-20 professionals in accounting field.  The purpose of the panel is to illustrate to students the many options available to them in the accounting field.  Each panelist explains their job duties and experience.   Kathleen Barney, will represent the field of forensic accounting.  She explained how one could combine their background in accounting with a CFE designation and have the skills and tools to investigate financial frauds

This is an 8-week master-level course. The whole class meets on campus one night each week (Thursday). Before their next class meeting,  the students complete interactive online assignments at home or work. This course earns 3 college credits or 45 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE). The text books are "Fraud Examination 2e" by Steve Albrecht, Conan Albrecht, and Chad Albrecht; and the ACFE's "Fraud Examiners Manual, 2006 US Edition on CD." Location: Keller Graduate School of Management of DeVry University, Phoenix Center, 2149 West Dunlap Avenue (near  I-17), Phoenix, Arizona. Keller offers a Master of Accounting and Financial Management (MAFM) Program with a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) emphasis. This is a required course for the Keller CFE program. Even if you are not pursuing a master degree, you could take the fraud course as a student-at-large. This is a good course if you are preparing to take the CFE Exam. Fraud Prevention and Detection                                April 12, 2006, Wednesday

Arizona CFE Chapter board member, Scott A. Mitchem, CPA, CVA, CFE of Price Kong & Company CPA’s, PA spoke to an ASU West internal audit class on fraud prevention and detection.  Scott explained the fraud triangle; discussed internal controls; and reviewed the ACFE’s Report to the Nation.  War stories on fraud were also shared with the students.

W.P. Carey Business School   February 21, 2006

Chapter Secretary Renee Jenkins gave a special presentation to W. P. Carey business students on the evening of February 21, 2006.  Students were invited to participate in a real life simulation of a Ponzi scheme where they could learn how easy it is to be manipulated into unethical behavior.

The famous story of Ponzi was told followed by a nuts and bolts lesson on how innocent employees can get drawn into a bad situation one baby step at a time.  Students were each given a character assignment to follow
throughout the evening.  The story was divided into years and a decision to stay or leave needed to be made at the end of each year.  At the end of evening, the students were told how Gary Green Eyeshade, Lazy Louis, Clever Carl, and New Kid on the block fared in the real-life version.


Cesar Chavez High School      Feb. 10, 2006

Guest speaker: Larry C. Adams, CPA, CFE, CIA, CISA.  A discussion with the Business Law and Accounting students and teachers at Cesar Chavez High School in Laveen, Arizona. Topics included trends in dishonesty, seven elements of fraud, wi-fi computer security, internet fraud, identity theft, credit reports, and calculating the additional sales a business needs to make to recover from a fraud loss.

Association of General Contractors of South Dakota: January 11, 2006

Kathleen Barney, CFE, AZ chapter board member, spoke on fraud in the construction industry and the most common schemes in construction.  She also discussed ways to recognize and prevent fraud in the industry.


Scottsdale Airpark Rotary: January 3, 2006

Kathleen Barney, CFE, AZ chapter board member presented to the rotary on the “Top Ten Fraud Schemes” and ways to recognize fraud.
